About Us

Research laboratory exploring the frontiers of science
to better understand our data-rich, complex world

Our Vision

To be a world leader in data science and complex systems research, education and innovation.

What is the CASL /ˈkasəl/

The Complex Adaptive Systems Laboratory (CASL /ˈkasəl/) is a research laboratory at the Industrial Engineering and Management Systems Department at the University of Central Florida’s College of Engineering and Computer Science. CASL is an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to the study of complex, difficult to understand phenomena such as the global economy, the global information environment, innovation ecosystems, sustainability, and social & cultural dynamics and evolution. CASL scientists study these problems using data science, network science, complexity science, cognitive science, machine learning, deep learning, social sciences, team cognition, among other approaches.

What are Complex Adaptive Systems?

Complex Adaptive Systems are natural (brain, ecologies, societies) or artificial (computer networks, artificial intelligence, evolutionary programs) systems characterized by complex behaviors that emerge as a result of non-linear spacio-temporal interaction amount a large number of system subcomponents at various scales.
